What is hydroponics and why does it work so well in Hawaiʻi?

Hydroponics is growing plants in water instead of soil. Nutrients that a plant would normally pull from the ground are dissolved directly into the water, delivered straight to the roots. The result is faster growth, bigger yields, and produce you know is clean — because you control exactly what goes in!

For Oʻahu families, hydroponics makes it possible to grow fresh produce year-round in Oʻahuʻs climate without a greenhouse. And because there is no soil, there are no soil-borne pests, no weeding, and no muddy knees.

Systems we install on Oʻahu

NFT (Nutrient Film Technique)

A thin film of nutrient-rich water flows continuously through sloped channels past the plant roots. Our most popular residential system. Compact footprint, high plant count, and easy to maintain. The 42-plant Provider tower on our shop page is an NFT system.

Best for: leafy greens, herbs, and most home installs.

Why it works in Hawaiʻi: NFT channels drain completely between nutrient pulses, which prevents the root rot that warm Oʻahu temperatures can accelerate in standing-water systems.

DWC (Deep Water Culture)

Plants float on rafts above a deep tank of aerated, nutrient-rich water. Highest yield per square foot of any system we build. Excellent for continuous harvesting — you can pull heads of lettuce daily once the system is mature.

Best for: larger leafy-green production, lettuce farms, café tie-ins.

Vertical Tower Systems

Individual plant cups stacked up a tower with a reservoir at the base. Takes up the least floor space of any system we build. Great starter system for families new to hydroponics.

Why it works in Hawaiʻi: Vertical systems maximize airflow around the plants, which reduces fungal issues in Oʻahuʻs humid months.

Ebb and Flow (Flood and Drain)

A timed pump floods the grow bed with nutrients on a set schedule, then drains completely. The wet-dry cycle drives deep root growth and is ideal for heavy fruiting plants that would struggle in a constant-flow NFT system.

Best for: fruiting plants (tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, eggplant), custom builds.

Why it works in Hawaiʻi: The drain cycle creates an oxygen-rich root zone that compensates for the higher water temperatures in outdoor Oʻahu builds.

‘The Process’

How we build your system

1. Free site assessment (60 min, no charge)

We visit your home or school, look at your available space, sun exposure, water access, and what you want to grow. We bring a measuring tape and real recommendations — no sales pressure, no obligation. Book through the Evaluate Your Space form.

2. Written proposal (within 5 business days)

You receive a proposal with: system type and size, plant capacity, installation timeline, total cost, and maintenance plan options. You have full visibility before committing to anything.

3. Installation day(s)

For most residential systems, installation takes 1–2 days on site. We bring everything, handle all the assembly and plumbing, and leave your space clean. You don’t need to lift a finger.

4. Planting and system startup

We stock your system with seedlings, set nutrient levels, dial in the pH, and run the system through its first full cycle with you present. We walk you through everything before we leave.

5. Ongoing maintenance (your choice)

Choose weekly, monthly, or quarterly maintenance visits — or manage it yourself with our guidance. We’re always a text away if something comes up between visits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of property can we install on Oʻahu?

We install on single-family homes, condos with lanais or rooftop access, schools, small farms, and commercial properties. If you have outdoor space with reasonable sun and water access, we can likely build there. We’ve installed on concrete lanais, wooden decks, gravel yards, and rooftops. Tight spaces are our specialty; the tower garden fits in a 2×2 foot footprint.

How long does it take from installation to first harvest?

For leafy greens and herbs, you can expect your first harvest 3–6 weeks after transplanting seedlings into a new system. Lettuce and most herbs reach harvest size in 5–7 weeks total from seed. Fruiting plants like tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers take longer — typically 10–16 weeks from transplant to first harvest.

How much water does a hydroponic system use compared to a regular garden?

A well-designed hydroponic system uses 70–90% less water than traditional in-ground gardening. The nutrient solution recirculates through the system rather than draining into the soil. A mature 42-plant tower system uses roughly 4–8 gallons per day at full load during a hot Oʻahu week — most of that is evapotranspiration from the plants themselves, not waste.

How much space does a hydroponic system need?

Our classic residential system, the 42-plant NFT system needs roughly a 6×3 foot footprint plus about 2 feet of clearance on each side for maintenance access. Larger DWC raft systems need more horizontal space but can be scaled to fit most lanais and side yards. We bring a measuring tape on every site assessment and won’t propose a system that doesn’t fit comfortably.

Do I need to grow anything in particular, or can I choose what I grow?

You choose what you grow. We recommend starting with fast-growing leafy greens and herbs — they give you confidence, quick results, and a steady supply of food. Once you’re comfortable, we can transition some slots to fruiting crops. We help you plan that during the site evaluation and proposal stage.

How often does a hydroponic system need maintenance?

A healthy system needs a 5-minute daily check (pump running, water level, plant visual), a 20–30-minute weekly check (pH and EC test, top-off nutrient solution, harvest and trim), and a full reservoir change every 2–3 weeks for greens. Our maintenance plans range from weekly visits to quarterly — you choose how much you do yourself.

What does a hydroponic system cost on Oʻahu?

Residential systems start at $899 for our 42-plant NFT system. Custom designs for larger spaces or specialty crops are quoted after a free site evaluation. Ongoing maintenance plans start at $149 for a one-time visit and go up to full-service weekly plans starting at $249 per month.

Do you service all of Oʻahu?

Yes. We are based in Mililani and serve the entire island: Wahiawā, Waipʻio, Pearl City, ʻAiea, Kapolei, Honolulu, Kailua, Kāneʻohe, the North Shore, and the Leeward Coast. There is no travel surcharge for any location on Oʻahu.

Can you install a system in a condo or rental building?

Yes, with some conditions. For condos we need lanai or rooftop access and your building’s approval. For rentals we work with landlords directly if needed. We keep systems freestanding and non-destructive so they can be removed cleanly if you move.
